When addressing spiritual warfare, believers often fall into one of two extremes. On one extreme, people attribute every problem in life to demons—lifting every rock to look for a devil behind every physical or personal mistake. On the other extreme, people grow weary and live in spiritual oblivion, shrugging their shoulders as if only the physical world exists ("whatever will be, will be").
Scripture calls us to a balanced, truth-grounded understanding in 2 Corinthians 10:3-4: though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh. Our weapons are not worldly or carnal, but mighty through God for pulling down strongholds and destroying every false argument raised against the knowledge of God.
Just as geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East affect nations across the globe whether people acknowledge them or not, an unseen spiritual conflict affects every life and family. Ignorance or neglect is never a strategy; we must rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15) and establish four foundational pillars:
1. First: There is a War.
2. Second: There is an Enemy.
3. Third: There is a Victor.
4. Fourth: There is a Responsibility.
Scripture reveals that this conflict did not begin on earth; its epicenter broke out in heaven itself (Revelation 12:7-9). Long ago, rebellion rose in the heavenly realm.
Notice a vital truth: this battle was never an equal contest between Almighty God and Satan. If Almighty God steps into the ring, there is no match and no comparison.
God did not even need to fight Lucifer personally; He commanded Archangel Michael and his angels to confront the dragon. Satan and his rebellious angels were no match even for Michael, and they lost their place in heaven and were hurled down to the earth.
Ezekiel 28:12-19 sheds prophetic light on how this enemy fell. Created as an anointed guardian cherub on the holy mount of God, adorned with gold and every precious stone (carnelian, chrysolite, emerald, topaz, onyx, jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise, and beryl), Lucifer was blameless from the day he was created until iniquity and pride were found in his heart. Because his heart became proud on account of his beauty and splendor, God drove him in disgrace from the mountain of God and cast him down to the earth.
Why did God cast this proud, jewel-adorned being down to this small planet of dust, and why does the enemy hate humanity so fiercely? Because God chose to humble the proud spirit by taking the very dust of the earth where Satan was cast, forming man out of that dust, and breathing into his nostrils the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). God purposed to use earthen vessels—creatures formed from dust, filled with His Spirit—to display His glory and execute judgment upon the enemy.
Therefore, you cannot casually say, "I will leave the devil alone so he leaves me alone; let a sleeping lion sleep." This lion doesn't sleep! 1 Peter 5:8 warns us to be sober and vigilant, because our adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Just as a predator stalks the animal that wanders away from the herd in careless isolation, the enemy looks for believers who walk in spiritual complacency. Paul likewise warns in 2 Corinthians 2:11 that Satan should not take advantage of us, "for we are not ignorant of his devices (schemes)."
That makes the opening claim of this page unavoidable:
Spiritual warfare is neither superstition nor passive fatalism; it is standing awake
in the truth of God's Word.
"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds."
"We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments."
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
"Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."
"You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold on the day you were created. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you... Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth."
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." / "Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour."
"...lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices (schemes)."
The conflict began when pride was found in a created cherub, and he was cast down to the dust.
Out of that very dust God formed man and breathed His Spirit to display His
glory.
Do not walk in spiritual complacency—be sober, be vigilant, and stand equipped with God's mighty weapons.
